Standards for the Initial Education and Training of Pharmacy Technicians

The “Standards for the Initial Education and Training of Pharmacy Technicians” is a document published by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) in October 2017.

It outlines the standards required for the initial education and training of pharmacy technicians in the UK.

It has two parts: Part 1 which outlines the minimum knowledge, skills, and behaviours that all pharmacy technicians should possess, and Part 2 which covers the minimum requirements for education and training programmes.

Part 1 of the document covers four key areas that all pharmacy technicians should be competent in. These include: professional conduct, patient safety and quality, pharmacy service delivery, and teamwork and communication. The document provides detailed information on the specific skills and knowledge required for each of these areas.

Part 2 of the document outlines the minimum requirements for pharmacy technician education and training programmes. The programmes must cover a range of topics including professional conduct, pharmaceutical science, patient safety, and communication skills. They must also provide students with practical experience in a range of settings including community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, and dispensing practice.

The document also provides guidance on the registration process for pharmacy technicians. To register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), applicants must demonstrate that they meet the education and training standards outlined in the document. They must also complete a criminal records check and provide evidence of their English language proficiency.

Overall, the document aims to ensure that pharmacy technicians have the necessary knowledge, skills, and behaviours to provide safe and effective care to patients.
